Write It Out Journal Prompts
Our Philosophy on Offering Journal Prompts on the Web
We have decided not to supply journal writing prompts on our website, for a number of reasons.
- There are innumerable sources for writing prompts in books and on the web. We can even guide you to some of them; see Inspiration Station.
- Offering writing prompts out of the context of our Workshops would do a disservice to our method. Our approach to Journal Writing in the Write It Out Journal Workshops is refined to a great degree, and after you have participated in the Workshop, you will have plenty to write about. We can't serve any of it up on the website because it is so important to be there to experience the entire carnival. We can't even give you very many hints, beyond what you can infer about our expertise and enthusiasm by perusing our website.
- We trust you to come up with what you need to write about! Instead
of searching the Internet or paging through a book for the right inspiration,
we suggest this:
- Take your journal and favorite pens (bring two or three) to a comfortable place in or around your house, or the cafe or library or workplace where you are right now.
- Drink a long, tall glass of water.
- Breathe.
- Move your attention to your own body for a few minutes. You will be able to go back to people-watching later, if you like. Listen to what your body wants. Slow down and pay attention to your physical sensations.
- If you are tired or restless, take your bottle of water for a short walk, and come back to write.
- Alternatively, take a nap or eat a healthy snack, if that's what your body is asking for.
- Write down that list of niggling errands and obligations to get them out of your mind.
- Take up the pen, open the journal, and set down the first thoughts that come to your mind. Keep going. See where it takes you.
Take a drink of water. Move. Breathe. Write.
Practice Self-Care.
